Two posts in one day… what’s going on? Thought the site needed a bit of a refresh, before we switch over to the brand new site later…. So I’ve changed the film teaser poster for one that now fits in with our marketing images and correct logo. Hope you like it. You can see a bigger version on the “About the Film” page.

Emerging from the Edit Suite…

Wow, is it February already? A belated Happy New Year to you all, and sorry about the lack of content on the blog. My excuse; being total focused on getting the film picture and sound edited. That and a bout of long-lasting flu of course.

So, we have finally finished the picture edit. It’s coming in at 90mins with end credits, so pretty pleased that we managed to get the length we wanted. Opening title sequence is complete, and it looks nice and simple, yet effective within the context of the story. We’ve made some cuts to the first third, so that we see our main characters earlier and get into the main story faster. Had some tricky scenes to put together, but we got there in the end. Other than that, it’s all gone rather well.

Next stage is that the film goes off for grading. This is when each shot and scene is matched for colour and other visual parameters, so that the whole film has a uniform look. Any picture issues can be tackled and more information teased out of the pictures — a little bit of movie magic. Also, we are able to give the film, or parts of the film, a more distinctive look and feel. Once the film is released, we’ll put a comparison scene test on the DVD, so you can see the difference, as it’s a little difficult to explain!

The sound has also been worked on, and we now have an audio work print. We have remixed the sound that was recorded on location, and adjusted the dialogue tracks so that scenes with several shots now sound like they were filmed simultaneously. Don’t forget, we shot this film on one camera — something of a rarity these days. Once we were happy with the dialogue (and we didn’t have to get the actors back to re-record lines, which was a massive relief — thanks Jerome!), then we looked at what sound effects were needed. For example, when we shot a scene in the pub, we had to make sure there was no background noise, so that we could record clean dialogue. That meant that we then had to put back in sounds of glasses, people chatting, moving around etc. Some of those sounds were recorded on location as wild tracks, others came from libraries, and the rest we went out and re-recorded ourselves. Then the final stage was to add in Eoghan’s soundtrack music — which, as you might expect, is brilliant.

So that’s the audio. It now goes off to a specialist sound studio where we mix and adjust the levels. Once that’s done, we do a Dolby 2.0 mix and we’re finished (no surround sound…).

Then once we have the pictures graded and the sound mixed, we add them together. There’s a final stage where we complete the picture correction work (which is half done), such as removing drooping microphone booms from the top of frames, and it’d finished.

As for when that will be, we are hoping early March. But knowing us… So when can you see it? We hope to be premiering the film at festivals in the UK and USA from June onwards. Plus, we’re going to have a special screening in Woolmer Green village hall for all of our extras and those who helped us; that will probably be April or May at the latest.

We’ll be starting work on the marketing now, so expect more trailers, images and posters etc from March onwards…

We have another mention in the Daily Mail newspaper. It’s in Friday’s newspaper and is also online. Lots of pics (one from the film) as well as coverage of Diana’s life and her role next week (Thursday) in the Channel 4 drama about the Queen.
Be warned, there is a minor spoiler in the article (and photo) concerning Diana’s character. Those who turned up at the church as extras will already know her role of course, but for everyone else, be warned. It’s not a major plot point, but it was supposed to be a bit of a surprise. Never mind, the major twist has stayed secret and will remain secret for as long as possible!!

She has just finished filming an eagerly-anticipated romantic British movie called Love/Loss, in which she stars with Virginia McKenna and Keith Michell. It is a charming story about a couple – McKenna and Michell – who were childhood sweethearts and are reunited after 60 years.

Miss Quick plays a newcomer to their village who befriends McKenna and gives her advice.

‘For a lot of the film, you don’t know what I am. There’s a slight hint that I might be an angel, but at the end it’s revealed that I’m a vicar. I’ve never played a priest before, and there’s been a lot of discussion about how I should look.

‘I couldn’t get Dawn French as the Vicar of Dibley out of my mind, and there was a danger that if I wore my hair in a certain way, I would look like her. There was also a debate on whether I could wear red nail varnish on my toes. One school of thought was it would look frivolous.

‘In the end, I played it as slightly more sophisticated than Dibley’s vicar, and not so ditzy, either.’
